I remember many holidays when my boys and I made our own decorations. We spent the afternoon crafting, with glitter and paint everywhere.

The kids were thrilled to see their creations come to life, and we all felt a sense of pride in what we had made together.

That day wasn’t just about the end results; it was about the time spent together, the teamwork, and the joy of creating something unique as a family.

Instructions For Making Clay Pot Love Bugs

Step 1: Prepare and Paint Your Clay Pots

painting the base coat of patriotic bug

Begin by removing any tags or stickers from the clay pots. Next, basecoat each clay pot in one of the patriotic colors: red, white, or blue. Allow the pots to dry completely before applying a second coat. We decided to make three pots, one in each color.

Step 2: Crafting Cute Antennae

making the antenna for the patriotic bug

Let’s make some adorable antennae for our bugs! Cut the chenille stems into four-inch pieces. Bend each piece in half to form the classic antenna shape. Now, glue a tinsel pom to each end of the bent chenille stems. Set these fun antennae aside—we’ll attach them to our bugs later.

Step 3: Add Playful Polka Dots

Adding contrasting dots

It’s time to give our clay pots some personality! Grab a pencil with a new eraser and dip the eraser end into a contrasting paint color.

Press the eraser onto the painted clay pots to create fun and colorful polka dots.

Feel free to mix and match colors to make your bugs extra festive. Once you’ve added enough dots, let the pots dry completely.

Step 4: Crafting Delightful Wings

putting the wings on the patriotic bug

It’s time to give our bugs some wings! Take the foam hearts and trim the bottoms off to create perfect wing shapes. Attach these lovely wings to the back of each painted clay pot with hot glue.

Step 4: Creating Adorable Faces

adding the face

Now it’s time to give our bugs some personality by adding their adorable faces! Start by gluing two googly eyes onto the wings. Trust us, it might sound weird, but it looks incredibly cute!

Next, dip the pencil eraser into pink paint and gently dot the cheeks beside where the nose will go. Draw a cheerful smile from cheek to cheek using a black permanent marker.

Finally, glue a small white pompom in the center to make a cute little nose. Your bugs will come to life with these delightful faces!

Step 5: Adding the Final Touches

putting on some stars

Let’s make our patriotic bugs truly sparkle! Attach star-shaped embellishments to the bugs, placing them wherever you think they’ll shine the most.

Now, it’s time to give our bugs their adorable antennae. Take the antennae you prepared earlier and insert them into the drainage hole at the top of the clay pot. Secure them with a small dab of glue to ensure they stay in place.

These final touches add charm and prepare your bugs for any 4th of July celebration!
