Outdoor scavenger hunts are a fantastic activity for kids and families. Spending time outdoors, especially in the woods, can be incredibly rewarding.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a part of England near three different woodlands. We visited them often, and I remember playing in the woods for hours.

A scavenger hunt is a handy activity to bring along when hiking in a forest or visiting the woods.

It is an easy way to encourage kids to connect with nature, enhance their observational skills, and foster a sense of curiosity.

What to Look for on an Outdoor Scavenger Hunt

I’m excited to share this scavenger hunt printable designed to challenge kids and encourage them to look carefully. Some things are pretty easy, like a tree log. Others may take a little longer to spot, like animal tracks.

It was harder than I thought to create a list. Our Canadian forests are home to diverse wildlife, including bears, coyotes, cougars, porcupines, and blueberries. But your forest/wood might contain very different wildlife.

watch out for animal tracks

I wanted to create a forest scavenger hunt that could be used anywhere. So, I carefully compiled a list of items common to all forests. It means that the items are more general. Here is my list.

  • a log
  • 3 kinds of leaf
  • squirrel
  • a tree with needles
  • A tree seedling
  • Bird nest
  • animal tracks
  • a bird
  • pinecone
  • spider web
  • A rock
  • An insect
  • Animal poop (I know, but your kids will love it)
  • Feather
  • Fern
  • A Y-shaped stick

You can download and print as many copies as you need, and then you will be ready for your outdoor adventure.

Tips for a Nature Scavenger Hunt

An outdoor scavenger hunt is a fantastic adventure for kids of all ages! I’ve enjoyed many hunts with kids of all ages. Here are some handy tips from my years of experience.

  1. Respect Nature: Teach your children the importance of not littering, damaging plants, or removing natural items from their environment. Leave everything as you found it.
  2. Clipboards Are Key: Arm each participant with a sturdy clipboard. It provides a hard surface to write on and helps prevent the scavenger hunt from tearing.
  3. ChooseBright Pencils. The brighter, the better. It is much easier to see if they are accidentally dropped among the leaves and twigs. Bring spares! I love these.
  4. Wear the Right Gear: I can’t emphasize this enough. Ensure everyone dresses for the weather and wears comfortable shoes suitable for uneven ground.
  5. Pack Snacks and Water: Bring along plenty of water and some snacks. Hunting for treasures can satisfy an appetite and thirst, especially in young adventurers.

These strategies can help make your forest scavenger hunt a delightful and smooth experience for all participants. Enjoy your time connecting with nature and each other!

Safety Tips To Keep The Whole Family Safe

When exploring smaller woodlands, many of the following safety rules may not seem necessary.

However, in some countries (like mine), forests are wilder. Children can wander off and get lost- sometimes for days. For this reason, it is important to discuss safety with your kids.

  1. Stay on Marked Trails: Always follow marked paths to avoid getting lost. These trails are mapped out and safer, helping prevent accidents and disorientation.
  2. Use Insect Repellent: Apply insect repellent generously to fend off mosquitoes, ticks, and other annoying and harmful bugs.
  3. Pack a First Aid Kit: Always bring a small first aid kit equipped with bandages, antiseptic, tweezers, and anything else you might need for minor injuries.
  4. Give Wildlife Space: Observe animals from a distance and do not disturb their natural behaviors. It’s important to respect their habitat and keep a safe distance.
  5. Carry a Whistle: Each member of your group should have a whistle. It’s a simple tool that can be invaluable if someone needs to call for help.

Additionally, when you’re with kids, it’s essential to reinforce these safety habits:

  • Stay Together: Always stick together as a group. It’s easier to manage safety and ensure no one strays too far.
  • Look, Don’t Touch: If you spot an interesting plant or animal, point it out, but remind children not to touch it. Some plants can be poisonous, and animals can react unpredictably when threatened.
  • Prepare for Emergencies: Teach your children what to do if they get separated from the group. Establish a plan and ensure they know who to contact, what to say, and where to go if lost.

Hug A Tree and Survive

I recommend the “Hug a Tree and Survive.” program for kids. It teaches children what to do if they get lost. Watch the video with your kids and discuss it.

You can also download a free coloring book.

These guidelines will help ensure your forest outings are safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.

A Creative Way to Continue Exploring Nature after the Hunt

Encourage kids to document their outdoor discoveries by creating a nature journal. They can draw pictures of plants and animals they see, jot down interesting facts, or even press leaves and flowers as keepsakes. Check out our post for more information about nature journaling.

Create a collection of nature books for children to enjoy when they return home. Children might enjoy reading about some of the plants, rocks, and animals they saw during their hike.
