Using A Glue Gun With Children
It is important to have adult supervision when using a glue gun with children. Although we use a “low temperature” glue gun, it can still cause burns if not used properly. Children should be taught how to handle the glue gun safely, and an adult should always be present to supervise and assist if needed.
Instructions
Make Thing 1 and thing 2

Cut out strips of blue felt 2.5″ by 9.” Use a ruler and permanent marker to mark the cutting lines. You should get 5 strips from a 9X12” sheet of felt.

Use your scissors to create a fringe along one edge of the strip. You will want to leave a border approximately 1 inch long.
Cut the fringed strip into three equal sections. Each strip will make the hair for 3 pencils.

Attach the fringed felt to the top of the pencil with glue. Roll the fringed strip tightly around the pencil, securing it with glue as you go.

Add two googly eyes to the blue felt fringe and tie a bow of baker’s twine under the face. How cute are these things?
Crafting tip: twirl the pencil between your hands to fluff out the hair and get the wild look.
Make the Flags

Cut thin strips of white cardstock measuring 1/2″ by 8 1/2″. Remove a triangular notch from each end to create the flag.
Write your favorite Dr. Seuss quote on the flags as shown. Here are some of my favorites
- Why Fit in when you were – born to stand out
- You have to be odd to be number one
- Today you are you! – That is truer than true!
- And will you succeed? -Yes! You will, indeed!
- A person’s a person -no matter how small.
- Oh, the things you can find- if you don’t stay behind!
We used a fine black marker to draw a sketchy outline around the flag’s border, but that is optional.
Turn the flag over and apply adhesive tape. Wrap the flag around the pencil, being sure to line up the two ends.
And that is it! Congratulations on completing the Thing 1 and Thing 2 pencil craft!
