I remember when I was a kid, I would spend hours on color by numbers.

Although I would recommend this activity to younger children 6-8, I have noticed older kids also love them. So what’s the appeal?

There are a variety of reasons. First, the activity presents a challenge. They must look at the key and determine which colors go where. It may seem easy to us, but it is a fun puzzle for kids just learning these skills.

Secondly, they get to see the picture unfold as they work. It’s like magic! I still remember the thrill of seeing the picture come to life. It never gets old.

Finally, kids love the sense of accomplishment they feel when they finish coloring a picture.

It’s an excellent way for them to boost their self-confidence. Besides, color by number is just plain fun! There is something very satisfying about filling in all the spaces with the correct colors.

How Do Color By Number Pictures Work?

I’m sure most readers know how this coloring activity works, but I’ll provide a brief description just in case.

Color by Number pictures are line drawings made up of distinct areas, almost like stained glass windows.

Each area has a number inside of it. That number corresponds to a color listed in a key on the page. In our printables, the key is under the picture.

Children must color each area according to the color indicated by the number. As they do, the picture is slowly revealed, which seems to be the attraction.

Help them to fill in one area at a time. Once your children get the hang of it, let them color away! Here are some tips on how to fill in the color by number pictures:

• Help younger children to identify the edges of each section. This will make it easier for them to stay within the lines.
