Special Christmas Morning Traditions For Families
Family traditions are the simple routines that bring everyone closer and create a sense of belonging.
They don’t need to be fancy or costly—in fact, the simpler they are, the more meaningful they tend to be.
It’s really just about doing something together, the same way, year after year. Feel free to adapt these traditions to suit your family’s unique preferences and dynamics.
The Christmas Shout-Out
Kick off Christmas morning with a burst of pure joy! Have everyone race around the house yelling, “Christmas is here!” at the top of their lungs.
Let the kids jump, dance, bang on pots, and yell until they’re out of breath.
It’s a silly, energy-filled way to release some pent-up excitement and start the day with smiles and giggles.
Christmas Dance Party
Turn up a silly Christmas song and let everyone dance like nobody’s watching! Whether it’s wiggling in pajamas or spinning around the living room, this quick burst of fun fills the house with laughter and cheer. It’s an easy, no-prep way to start the morning with smiles and holiday spirit.

Christmas Tree Photo Tradition
Snap a quick photo of the kids in front of the tree each year—no need for matching outfits or perfect poses. Capture the joy and chaos just as it is. Over time, these photos become a beautiful record of how your family has grown and changed through the years.
Christmas Day Height Check
Grab a tape measure and record the kids’ heights on Christmas morning. Sure, most families do it at the start of the school year, but why not make it a festive tradition instead? It’s a fun way to see how much they’ve grown each year—and a sweet reminder of how quickly time passes.
Christmas Morning Giggles
Start the day with laughter by scattering Christmas jokes around the house! Tuck one into the kids’ slippers, place another on their breakfast plate, tape one to the bathroom mirror, or slip a few into the tree branches. Write out your own jokes ahead of time—or make it easy and grab my pack of printable Christmas joke cards to print, cut, and hide for a fun surprise.

Mistletoe Moments
Hang a sprig of mistletoe in a favorite spot and make good use of it on Christmas morning, especially when the kids are watching! A quick kiss or a playful smooch brings smiles all around. It’s a sweet, lighthearted tradition that fills your home with love and laughter.

Placing the Baby Jesus
If you have a nativity set, hold back the baby Jesus until Christmas morning. When the time comes, gather everyone to place Him gently in the manger. You could even walk around the house together, carrying the figure to symbolize Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem—a simple, meaningful way to honor the heart of Christmas.
The Final Advent Surprise
Make the last Advent calendar window feel extra special! Gather everyone together and let the kids open it while you cheer and celebrate. It’s a sweet way to mark the end of the countdown and welcome Christmas morning with a moment of shared excitement and joy.
The Early Gift Rule
Let the kids open one present before breakfast—something fun they can play with. It keeps them happily entertained and gives you a few peaceful moments to prepare breakfast. Plus, it builds a little extra excitement for the rest of the gifts waiting under the tree.
Easy Christmas Breakfast
Start the morning with a family breakfast together. Keep it simple and don’t add extra pressure to be Pinterest-perfect. A Santa-shaped pancake is adorable, but regular pancakes taste just as sweet! If you want some easy Christmas themed breakfasts, there is a great list here.
Keep it easy with make-ahead breakfast casseroles, muffins, or cinnamon rolls so you can relax, sip your coffee, and enjoy the morning magic with your family. Here’s a list of easy breakfasts.

Hot Chocolate Cheers
Kick off the morning with a warm, cozy toast! Hand out mugs of hot chocolate and clink them together before taking that first sip. It’s a simple way to pause, smile, and start the day with a little sweetness and togetherness. Try our recipe for thick, creamy Italian hot chocolate, or use a store-bought mix if you prefer a simpler approach.

Read a Christmas Story Together
Gather everyone on the couch and read a favorite Christmas book or the nativity story before the day gets too busy. It’s a calm, meaningful way to reconnect and remember what Christmas is all about.
Christmas Pajama Parade
Before anyone gets dressed, line everyone up for a festive pajama parade! March through the house, play music, and show off those matching (or mismatched) Christmas PJs. It’s silly, fun, and makes for great photos.
Christmas Morning Walk
Bundle up and head outside for a quick walk on Christmas morning. Breathe in the crisp air, enjoy the quiet streets, and admire the festive lights. It’s a peaceful way to soak in the magic before the rest of the day begins.
Christmas Morning Calls
After the gifts are unwrapped, take a few minutes to call or video chat with loved ones who couldn’t be there. The kids will love showing off their presents and sharing their excitement. It’s a lovely way to stay connected and express gratitude to family and friends from afar.

Christmas Candle Rituals
Begin Christmas morning with a quiet, meaningful moment. Light a candle and gather everyone around for a short family ritual—a pause before the excitement of unwrapping gifts begins.
After 50 years of working with children, I’ve learned that even the youngest ones sense the beauty and wonder of simple traditions like this.
If you have the tradition of an Advent wreath, you can light the Christmas candle. Otherwise, any pillar candle will do.
Here are 2 ideas

Sending Christmas Blessings
Gather around a candle and light it. Say, “The time of waiting is over. Christmas is here!” Let us breathe in the blessing of Christmas. (Model taking a long, slow breath.)
Invite family members to name loved ones or friends who are not present with you.
When you have finished, invite children to cup their hands together in front of their mouths and whisper, “Christmas love. Christmas blessings.” Hold up your cupped hands out in front of your mouth, and on the count of three, everyone blows the blessings out to all the people they named.
Light A Candle For Peace
Gather around a candle. Light it and explain that people around the world light candles as a sign of their hopes for peace.
Play or sing ‘Light a Candle for Peace.’ Preschoolers will love to sing along.
Ask older children to look at the candle and imagine what it would be like to live in a world where there was no more fighting or arguing. Afterwards, invite family members to say one way they could show kindness in the world. Affirm them with the words, “(Name), you are a peacemaker.”
Safety With Candles
- Obviously, children should be carefully supervised around lit candles and keep lighters out of reach.
- If you are worried about naked flames, use an electric candle or a candle inside a lantern with a little door like this one.
- Use a simple candle snuffer to extinguish the candles. It prevents hot wax from splashing on tender skin. Children love using them!
