Instructions For Making The American Flag Craft

Step 1: Getting Ready To Craft

corks laid out in 7 rows and 5 corks in each row

Gather all of your supplies. Then, arrange the wine corks to create 7 rows, each with 5 corks.

Divide the wine corks for painting. You will need 6 blue, 13 white, and 16 red.

Step 2: Painting the components of The American Flag Craft

painting the corks

Paint the wine corks with craft paint. Keep the color thin enough to let the printed words on the cork peek through, as this adds visual interest.

Now it is time to prepare the stars for our flag. You may need to use more stars if you make a larger flag. Paint 3 stars with a light coating of white craft paint.

Step 3: Making the Base of The American Flag Craft

Cutting out the cardboard base for the American flag craft

Take a piece of cardboard from a shipping box, and measure out a 6-inch X 9-inch-long rectangle. Cut out the measured rectangle, creating the perfect base for your flag.

Note: You may need to adjust the size of the cardboard base if your corks are larger.

Step 4: Adding The Rows Of Corks

gluing the corks onto the base by rows

Use a glue gun to attach the corks. Start at the bottom of the flag.

  • First row is all red.
  • Second row is all white.
  • Third row has two blue corks on the left and three red ones to the right.
  • Fourth row has two blue corks on the left and three white ones to the right.
  • Fifth and final row has two blue corks on the left and three red ones to the right.

Step 5: Finishing Up Your American Flag Craft

After securing all the corks, neatly trim the cardboard around the edges.

Cut some natural jute twine for a hanger (about 12 inches). Attach to the back top corners with the glue gun.

Now add the white wooden stars, as shown.

For an optional touch of sparkle, use a paintbrush to gently dab holographic craft paint onto the stars, giving them a shimmering finish that will catch the eye.

Tips for Making Your Cork American Flag Craft

Making this Wine Cork American Flag is simple and fun, but here are some helpful tips to ensure a smooth crafting experience:

  1. Cork preparation: If you’re using corks from your collection, ensure they’re clean and dry before starting the project. If they’re damp or stained, gently clean them with a damp cloth and let them dry thoroughly.
  2. Paint variations: Feel free to experiment with different shades of red, white, and blue. You can also adjust the paint thickness to achieve the desired look. Letting the cork’s printing show through gives added interest.
  3. Cork arrangement: Before gluing the corks to the cardboard, lay them out on your work surface to visualize the final result. This will help you make any necessary adjustments to ensure a balanced appearance.
  4. Glue options: While a hot glue gun is recommended for quick adhesion, you can also use liquid craft glue if you don’t mind waiting for it to dry. Just be prepared to give it extra drying time before moving on to the next step.
  5. Size Of Flag: If you create a larger or smaller flag, adjust the number of corks accordingly. The measurements provided in the instructions are for a 6 X 9-inch flag, but you can quickly scale it up or down based on the number of corks you use.
  6. Hanging alternatives: Ribbon, wire, or even a picture frame hanger can all be used instead of jute twine. Choose what works best for your home décor and personal preferences.
