Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup chopped semi-sweet chocolate
  • 2 cups milk
  • Whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or marshmallows (for topping, optional)

Instructions

  • Combine the milk and sugar in a medium saucepan. Warm it over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the milk starts to steam.
  • In a small bowl, stir the cocoa powder and cornstarch with a few tablespoons of warm milk. Mix until you get a lump-free, silky paste. This step prevents clumps from ruining your hot chocolate.
  • Pour the cocoa paste back into the saucepan. Keep whisking to blend everything evenly—it should already start looking beautifully chocolatey!
  • Add the chopped chocolate chips and stir until melted
  • Let the mixture simmer for a minute to thicken. Keep stirring to keep it smooth.
  • Stir in a pinch of salt to enhance the deep chocolate flavor. It's a small touch that makes a big difference!
  • Serve and garnish: Pour the thick Italian hot chocolate into mugs. For a fun, indulgent finish, add a dollop of whipped cream, a sprinkle of chocolate shavings, or some mini marshmallows.
