There are times when the business of life can leave you feeling disconnected as a family. You know that you need to spend time with your kids, but what to do? How can you make the best of the time you have together.
I know that Pinterest is a wonderful source of activities and ideas, but it can also be a huge distraction.
Going down the Pinterest rabbit hole
I log into Pinterest with the intention of finding one good family activity. Then all those lovely pins hit my eyeballs and all reason leaves me. Two hours later I’ve pinned everything from amazing storage solutions, to 10 awesome campfire recipes, to a tutorial to make minion bananas!
I still don’t have a decent activity, all that time has slipped away and I have nothing to show for it.
And sadly is that even though I’ve spent all that time pinning all these amazing ideas, I don’t actually use many of them.
Tell me I’m not the only one!
Here’s the problem
What we are looking for are family activities that are fun, easy to do and use stuff you already have around the house right?
If you are like me spending time with your kids is not the problem.
It’s making the most of that time together.
You just need a ready source of ideas that won’t suck you into digital rabbit hole like Pinterest.
I found two amazing tools
The first was my ready to go list of no prep activities. These are great when you have 15 minutes and want something fast and fun.
But when we had a little more time together I want something else. That’s when I turn to my activity books. There is nothing like having a couple of really great activity books on hand for inspiration and help.
Pinterest is great, but when you need an activity RIGHT NOW a good book crammed full of ideas is way better.
- For starters it’s a lot faster to flip through a book with your kids.
- It’s good for everyone to get away from the screens for a while.
- A book works even when the Internet or power goes down.
- As a general rule most of the things printed in books have been kid tested. That is NOT the always the case with the ideas on Pinterest. I’ve had my share of Pinterest fails!
There are loads of great activity books out there, so I’ve rounded up a wonderful collection that provides great value for money. One or two of these will give you ample ideas for fun family activities.
This list of activity books have been approved by families. And if it makes any difference this mom, educator and former children’s librarian has also approved them. I’d love to add to this list, so before you go, please leave a comment with your favorite activity book for families
You’ll be saving parents everywhere from Pinterest oblivion!
